Can Storage Help You Streamline Your Shipping Process?

by Jose Williamson

The thing about running a business today is that if you don't have an online store, you likely aren't going to get too far. Although having a brick-and-mortar store for people to visit is nice, you can clearly reach more people if you have an online store as well. Whether you deal with clothing, home goods, shoes, sporting goods, office supplies, or anything else, having the space to store all of your inventory in is critical.

Depending on how much inventory you are dealing with, you may be able to get away with storing it in a storage room at your offices or your brick-and-mortar store. Then, you can have your shipping department just work out of that storage room to get everything out to customers on time.

If, however, you work with a ton of inventory then you may want to consider getting warehouse storage. The great thing about warehouse storage is that you won't just have space to put your current inventory in, but you may also have room to grow. Also, you can set up your entire shipping department from the warehouse to create a streamlined process. For instance, you can have one person in charge of printing orders, one person in charge of pulling orders, and then you can have another person in charge of packaging orders. When you do have a process in place, it leaves less room for error.

If you do decide to rent a warehouse for storage, just make sure that you have everything organized either by category or alphabetically. By creating a system as soon as you move into the warehouse, you can get your staff trained on how to continue this system and you will know that everything is consistently in a place where it's supposed to be. Plus, when you get new shipments in, your staff will know where it should go so that it's easy to find when it's time to ship it out to a customer.

The internet has forever changed the way that businesses run in both a good way and a stressful way. Because having an online store allows you to reach both nationally and domestically, you are likely going to have tons more clients to ship to. To keep your inventory organized and ready to be shipped out, consider the things that are discussed in this article.
